Water Boat Taxi

I finally got my iPhone working so I needed to sell back the Samsung I had bought. Right outside my condo is a canal, in which water boat taxis run. I see them pass by all the time and decided it was time to adventure and see where it takes you. I knew the general direction it headed, but no idea what stop to get off at.

I walked to the pier and was looking at the map trying to figure out my route. These two men walk up and said, “Ohh, you’re first time taking the boat, huh?” Well I didn’t think I looked that obvious, but apparently so. I told them I was definitely a rookie at the water taxi.  They were from Australia and visiting for the week and had taken the boat a few times before. They tried to explain the routes a bit but their one big piece of advice was to move quick, the boat doesn’t stop for long.

Boy were they right.

The boat pulled up, slammed against the pier, I hopped on and hung on to the rope overhead, then the boat was off again. I wasn’t even completely on yet, I had to jump down to the seating area, but we were well on our way. Holy cow! The Australians laughed at me a bit, after checking to see if I was hanging in. They also paid for my ticket, a total of 40 Baht for 3 people, just over $1.

I can’t even begin to explain what all is in the canal, so I like to classify it as “gross things.” The water smells horrible, there is a ton of floating trash, and occasionally you will see a hissing lizard. Also, when boat gets up to speed you get the canal water mist on your face…. Bonus!

I decided that there was no way I could get out of the boat as quickly as I got in, considering I basically fell in the boat, climbing out would be more of a challenge. I would ride the boat until it came to a complete stop somewhere. Successful plan.

Let’s just say the sky train was my choice of transportation for the trip home.
