15 Fun Facts

1. The food is fabulous. If you find the right place, it is really really cheap. I could eat a full dinner for $2.

2. I live on a really busy street, a street that literally never sleeps. Walking home on a Monday night is equivalent to walking in downtown Tulsa on a Saturday night during a festival.

3. Good hair days don’t exist. The second you walk outside you get hit in the face with humidity. Also, you will forever be shiny and sweaty. At least the coconut water is tasty and refreshing.

5. I have never had so much appreciation for a dryer. I just really hate when my shirts are crunchy and stiff. I miss fluffy cozy clothes that dry in 30 minutes.

6. Taxi drivers are either the meanest people or the greatest people. The ones that speak English try and be so hip when they find out I’m from America. With phrases like “sup man” “yeah brotha” throwing up the peace sign, and calling other drivers on the road inappropriate words. It is quite entertaining.

7. The telephone wires scare me. There are so many wires wrapped up and strung from pole to pole. Its not pretty, but I guess it gets the job done.

8. I’m slowing learning Thai. I can count to 10 and say some of the important phrases like, where is the bathroom, turn left, turn right, go straight, stop, hello/bye, thank you.

9. Cockroaches are everywhere and I’m not okay with it. Like my cockroach radar is on red at all times. People here are use to it and look at me like I’m crazy. Cockroaches are something I will never ever get use to.

10. Sometimes you just can’t tell if you are talking to a ladyboy. I think one gave me a pedicure last weekend, but I will forever be unsure.

11. There are always strange smells. Everywhere.

12. Motorbike taxis scare the heck out of me. At this point I would rather walk and sweat than get somewhere quickly. That may change when hot season rolls around. (it is always hot, but hot season is like double time hot)

13. Food by phone: the greatest and worst invention. I can order literally any food you can imagine and have it delivered to my door. Really comes in handy when it is rainy or when its lazy Sundays.

14. The way to laugh over text is 555. The number 5 in Thai is pronounced “ha”

15. It is a small world. I have seen a few people wearing Thunder jerseys. Today, I wore my Oklahoma State t-shirt and a father and daughter stopped me….she works in Stillwater and we have mutual friends from high school. Such a small world!!

  1. This is fabulous, thank you for sharing all of this. I can say I was rather worried about you going over there but it seems that you are loving it and there are Americans all around to help you. Your room and apartment look beautiful. I can’t believe Mac and cheese is $ 8.00 and you have no dryer, oh the things we take for granted. I envy you for being brave enough to take this step and experience life. Take care my friend and thanks again for sharing
