Loy Krathong and Thanksgiving

We celebrated Loy Krathong on November 25. Loy Krathong is a holiday to bless the water. Here are some of my kiddos and myself dressed in traditional Thai clothes.

We made Krathongs at school and floated them in our pool. We had an assembly and had Thai dancers and Thai fighters perform. That evening some of us went to the park and floated our krathongs. It was a really beautiful sight. There were stands on the street where you could buy krathongs. They were made of all kinds of things. The original krathongs were made of bamboo and banana leaves. We saw some that were made of bread, so that it wouldn’t pollute the water and the fish could enjoy it, and some that were made of pieces of plastic. There were even some made of ice cream cones!

Thanksgiving day was just a normal workday. We had a staff party on Friday after school. We had turkey and rolls, mashed potatoes and casserole, pumpkin pie and all kinds of delish food.

Stephanie has an oven, which isn’t very common here in Bangkok, so we decided to do some baking for the dinner. She made pumpkin pie and I made pumpkin bread. It was definitely comical trying to shop for all the ingredients and bread pans. They didn’t have any large size bread pans… so I made about 14 miniature pumpkin breads. A can of pumpkin cost $6.50… and its a challenge to bake when you don’t have a can opener. Ha!

On Saturday I went to Friendsgiving with some teachers I have met from a few different schools around Bangkok. Met some new friends and ate another delish meal!
